Forbidden Foods

I am a big fan of not forbidding myself any foods. Even though I eat clean, I believe that any food is allowed in moderation. That said, there are certain foods that I will not buy to stock in my house. There is a certain reason for this: I will eat them to excess without stopping. Most of the foods are not healthy, but some are. Here's some of my banned foods:
- Cookies. One time I got a free pack of oreo-like cookies and I think I gobbled them up in about three days.
- Ice cream. I can only buy the single serve or pint containers. I will eat a half gallon way too quickly.
- Nuts. I am a picker if there is a food in the house that is easily picked at. Nuts are way to easy to grab a few each time I pass through the kitchen. I stick to nut butter because it's easier to keep a spoon out of the jar.
- Chocolate Chips. I can keep a chocolate bar in my fridge and share a bite of it nightly with John after dinner, but once they take chip form, they become just like the nuts. I buy these only if I have a plan to bake with them immediately. No hanging around my house.
- Granola. I cannot make or buy this. I scarf it down way too quickly. It goes into my mouth without a thought just like the nuts.
- Home-Baked Goods. I love to bake but I have a hard time limiting portions when I bake. Neither John nor I need to eat a lot of goodies. I try to cut recipes in half or make mini-size portions that I can freeze. I try not to give foods to co-workers since I know most of the others I work with are also trying to limit goodies. Why sabotage them?
- Chips. Any type. I simply cannot avoid them and they will be eaten too quickly.

So how do I enjoy these foods then? Easy. I get them when I'm out. For example, if we get Subway, John and I will share a small bag of chips. It's easy to limit myself when I only have a few in front of me. Another trick is to buy the (more expensive) smaller portion packages usually found at convenience stores. I don't do this a lot obviously, but if I really have a craving, I use this method.

I realize that some people can have the foods in their house and still avoid them, but I am not that person. If it is there, I will think about it until I eat it. It's not healthy. Rather than fighting with myself about it, I have chosen to simply not keep them around. My thoughts become less food-related and more about life.

What foods do you keep out of your house? What tricks do you use to keep yourself eating foods in moderation rather than overindulging?

  1. I have to keep chips out of my house. Period. Pita chips and tortilla chips I tend to have the worst time with. If I do buy chips, I buy the baked kettle chips and divide them into little baggies. There are only 4 servings to a bag so its not that much damage done if I happen to make the mistake of not dividing them.
I do well if things are portioned out, meaning I generally wont go back for more. One baggie is *usually* enough.
